Over the last two decades, Career Communications Group's Women of Color magazine has published thousands of stories featuring women of color in STEM. In 2018, the Women of Color in STEM Conference celebrated its 23rd anniversary.
The 'Woman to Woman Up Close and Personal' seminar, a popular event, was attended by Aknesha Miller Barui, a global capture and operations executive at Harris Corporation.
The seminar 'Me Too and Times Up!' was moderated by Rainia Washington, Vice President for Culture, Diversity, and Equal Opportunity Programs at Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Ted Childs from Ted Childs LLC.
The discussion examined the impact of the Time's Up and #MeToo movements on women in STEM and drew a full audience. The panel talked about workplace harassment, the need for allies to address discrimination, and shared examples of sexual harassment.
The participants discussed whether the existence of movements like Me Too and Time's Up intimidate or threaten allies who may be willing to support career development for women of color in STEM.
The conference's gala concluded with an award ceremony, where Denise Gray, CEO of LG Chem Power and 2017 Technologist of the Year, passed the torch to 2018 Technologist of the Year, Donna L. Bell, Director of Research Operations at the Ford Motor Company.
Bell shared in her acceptance speech how her passion for math and science was nurtured by her mother, leading her to pursue a degree in electrical engineering and a successful career at Ford. The conference theme was 'Press for Progress,' reflecting the global push for gender equality.
Alexandra Garr-Schultz, a doctoral candidate and winner of the 2018 Women of Color in STEM Student Leadership Award, felt affirmed by the recognition and appreciated the support of her team's nomination.
