Dr. Treva Brown, the 2021 Women of Color STEM Community Service Award winner, makes a guest appearance on the 42nd episode of the High-Tech Sunday podcast on Sunday, August 29.
Please join us as we sit down for a conversation with Dr. Brown on her chosen theme: Children are the Future.
Dr. Brown is commended for taking her love of science and transforming it into the “Dr. B.’s Science Adventures” series, where she engages with youth while doing experiments that apply basic science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) principles. Brown hopes to turn these ventures into a non-profit and children’s cartoon series to benefit kids across the Gulf South and beyond.
Be the change you want to see is a quote that Brown lives by as she continuously strives to change the narrative, particularly among youth from communities underrepresented in STEM. Brown motivates young people to learn through fun and engaging science experiments while inspiring them to pursue STEM careers. She is a deserving recipient of the many awards she has received.
Brown joined the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Mississippi after completing her undergraduate at Louisiana State University in 2011. She earned a doctorate in chemistry at the University of New Orleans in 2017. With a passion for microscopy, she helps the Department of Defense gain an understanding of organisms that cause corrosion on metal materials. On any given day she can be found performing electron microscopy imaging, essentially looking at samples down to a single electron, analytical and elemental analysis of specimens, or writing about her research.
Brown’s work ranges from corrosion research to external research focused on microbial populations, electrochemical data, electrochemical sensors, corrosion mechanisms, and biodegradation. She established an analytical protocol for diagnosing microbiologically influenced corrosion of copper-nickel heat exchanger samples aboard Navy ships and began microbial corrosion studies related to fabric panels.
Brown is a strong contributor to the ongoing corrosion science research in the Physical Oceanographic Processes Section. She spearheads initiatives aimed to improve diversity and inclusion within the scientific community. Furthermore, she is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, and is chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the Microscopy Society of America.
Brown holds the 2021 title of "Ms. Black Louisiana International Ambassador" for advocating a platform aimed at encouraging young adults to attain their goals, especially in STEM. Last year, she was nominated “2020 Best Woman in S.T.E.M.” by a group that recognizes leaders making a positive impact on New Orleans. She was also named one of Northshore Louisiana’s Forty under 40.
Career Communications Group (CCG) is celebrating the first anniversary of their podcast, "High-Tech Sunday." The podcast features 42 episodes with topics such as choosing a career in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, inspiration, mentoring professional and personal development, and more. In its inaugural year, "High-Tech Sunday" attracted hundreds of CCG alumni, BEYA winners, and WOC STEM Award winners and continues to expand its reach.
High-Tech Sunday's weekly program is produced by and for CCG’s community of alumni and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, thought leaders, and aspiring students, to bring a concentrated discussion around technological advancements and achievements based on universal moral principles.
