The 2021 Women of Color (WOC) Leadership Award for College-Level Promotion of Education goes to Freddie M. Dixon, Ph.D.
The award is given to a college professor who has demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving superior engineering, scientific and technical education programs.
Dr. Dixon is a biology professor in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).
She is a passionate advocate for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines.
As program director of the STEM center at UDC, she has spearheaded the expansion of undergraduate research and funding opportunities for students and faculty.
She has also facilitated research experiences for over 700 students and conducts community outreach partnering with external programs to provide scholarships for students and professional opportunities for STEM faculty.
“Dr. Dixon brings professionalism and compassion for her students and their success,” said Victor R. McCrary, professor of chemistry at UDC and vice-chair of the National Science Board.
