Anike Sakariyawo is the executive director of the S.E.E.K Foundation, an organization established in 2012 to bridge the STEM disparity gap in Title-1 schools and provide all children with access to STEM education.
Anike started her career as a K-3 grade teacher in the Miami Dade County Public Schools District, where she taught Student Exceptional Education (SES) to students with learning disabilities, emotional behavior disorders, other health impairments, and gifted students for five years.
She spent the remaining ten years of her fifteen-year tenure teaching various subjects, including biology, earth space science, physical science, and physics, and was committed to teaching despite feeling intimidated about making science engaging and captivating for her students.
Due to limited resources provided by her school district, she enrolled in a local community college to gain more knowledge about scientific subjects, which ultimately led her to pursue a master's degree in education for general science.
As an educator in Title-1 schools, Anike witnessed the educational gap that inspired her to implement private STEM programs at different schools and create the S.E.E.K Foundation.
In 2016, she led her agency in launching its first Robotics program at Miami Norland Senior High School, and later established an all-girls STEM summer camp that allowed attendees to select from different areas of study.
When the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, Anike and her team quickly transitioned many programs to virtual platforms and delivered STEM/STEAM kits to parents to engage children in concepts not typically taught in a classroom.
The SEEK Foundation provides high-quality STEM programs for children of color living in impoverished neighborhoods in the greater Miami and Broward Area and Greater Atlanta, and has built strong partnerships with various organizations, including Florida International University, Florida Memorial College, The City of Miami Gardens, Blackstone, Microsoft, General Motors, Miami Dolphins NFL, After School All Stars-DC, Bumble, and more.
Anike sells STEM kits for parents and children to do together at home and provides training for teachers who teach or want to teach STEM-related topics. These ventures support her mission to engage students of color from impoverished communities and ensure their success.
The SEEK Foundation, which started with zero dollars, now has a $1,000,000+ budget and 15 staff members. Sakariyawo's short-term goal is to launch a virtual school that will transition into a community space for children to engage in quality STEM education that can provide certificates in vocational STEM skills.
The focus is to implement programs that utilize the two-generation approach, to have STEM education, job training, and career-building services for low-income parents while simultaneously providing STEM education for their children.
