In 2021, the American public was invited to submit recommendations for potential United States Mint coin honorees through a web portal established by the National Women's History Museum.
Starting in 2022, the U.S. Mint launched a coin program to celebrate women's accomplishments and contributions.
The American Women Quarters program will release up to five new reverse designs annually until 2025.
The obverse of each coin will maintain a likeness of George Washington, but it is different from the design used during the previous quarter's program.
The quarters honor trailblazing women in various fields, including science, space, and the arts.
The women celebrated on the quarters released in 2022 included Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and Nina Otero-Warren, the first woman superintendent of Santa Fe public schools.
In 2023, the women celebrated included Bessie Coleman, the first African American and first Native American woman licensed pilot, and Edith Kanakaʻole, an indigenous Hawaiian composer and custodian of native culture and traditions.
This year, the women celebrated will include Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to serve in Congress, and Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War-era surgeon and women's rights and dress reform advocate.
In 2025, the U.S. Mint will include Dr. Vera Rubin, an astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation, and Stacey Park Milbern, an activist for people with disabilities.
Each American Women Quarters coin obverse will feature a portrait of George Washington facing right, composed initially and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser, one of the most prolific women sculptors of the early 20th century.
She designed the Alabama Centennial Half Dollar in 1921, becoming the first woman to create a U.S. coin.
The Secretary of the Treasury selects the honorees for the American Women Quarters program following consultation with the Smithsonian Institution's American Women's History Initiative, the National Women's History Museum, and the Congressional Bipartisan Women's Caucus.
