Jia Wang was honored with a Special Recognition at the 20th annual Women of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Conference.
She joined AT&T Labs in 2001. Her interests include computer networking, Big Data, mobile networks, and software-defined networks.
She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
Jia earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in computer science from Cornell University in 1999 and 2001, respectively.
Hui-ping Wang, Ph.D., holds over 30 patents and more than 20 intellectual properties in production.
In addition to her Women of Color Technical Innovation Award, she has received four GM Boss Kettering Awards (GM’s highest corporate award for innovation), the 2016 R&D 100 Award, the 2021 STEP Ahead Award from the Manufacturing Institute, and she was honored as Asian American Engineer of the Year in 2022.
She attended Tsinghua University in Beijing for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering mechanics. She obtained her doctorate in mechanical engineering from The University of Iowa in 2000.
Hui-Ping’s research spans from mathematical modeling of materials processing physics to experimental methods for manufacturing process development.
Her pioneering work on physics-based modeling of laser-material interactions helped to unravel the root causes of prevailing laser application challenges and develop robust laser welding processes for many GM vehicle programs, including the recent electric vehicles.
As a Technical Fellow at General Motors, she inspires researchers and engineers to develop automotive manufacturing systems.
She has mentored dozens of university students.
In her acceptance speech at the WOC STEM Gala, Hui-ping shared her journey of growing up in a small town in China and pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in the United States.
She emphasized the importance of working hard and taking advantage of every opportunity to achieve our dreams, regardless of our country of origin or skin color. Hui-ping finds her work at General Motors rewarding because she sees her innovations being used to create greener and safer vehicles.
