Lina M. Echeverria was honored as the 2006 Women of Color Technologist of the Year.
In 2009, she retired as the director of exploratory markets and technologies at Corning.
Echeverría was the first woman to graduate in engineering geology from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia at Medellín, paving the way for future generations of women in engineering at the country's most esteemed engineering school.
She then completed her Ph.D. in geology at Stanford.
Over the course of twenty-five years, Echeverria played a key role in driving innovation.
She led teams of scientists and researchers in developing various products, ranging from ceramic filters for car exhausts to glasses for TV screens and dinnerware.
She also contributed to the creation of optical fiber, which forms the backbone of the Internet, as well as the glass used in the touchscreen displays of iPhones.
