It's Computer Science Education Week, and we are highlighting Women of Color STEM Conference award winners in computer science and related fields.
Akilah D. Crowner is recognized as a trailblazer and a leader in modern technology.
She earned a bachelor's degree in Information Sciences and Systems from Morgan State University and has since held various roles, including computer programmer, systems analyst, systems designer, information manager, and systems integrator.
In 2018, Akilah joined General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) as an IT service management systems engineer manager for the Navy Enterprise Service Desk, supporting the Navy and Marine Corps business area.
In this role, she oversaw data integration for a cloud-based service desk, utilizing commercial IT service management principles, omnichannel telephony, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Prior to her work with the Navy Enterprise Service Desk program, Akilah was a senior developer at the Defense Information Systems Agency at Fort Meade, where she led multiple projects focused on designing, developing, testing, and implementing system changes and data integration.
She has also served as a technical lead and senior developer for Acuity, Inc., as well as at the U.S. Department of State.
Additionally, Akilah was the lead engineer for a team that managed consolidation efforts related to the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) for the Department of Defense at the Defense Media Activity in Fort Meade.
She played a significant role in consolidating services for the Naval Media Center, Army Broadcasting, and Air Force News into a single service desk.
Her extensive experience also includes positions at the U.S. Census Bureau, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Social Security Administration, and the Joint Strike Fighter program.
Akilah contributed to a commercial project for Children’s National Hospital as well.
She is a BMC and Microsoft Certified Professional, holding A+ and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) professional certifications.
