Jessica R. Jones received a Pioneer Award while she was a senior aeroelastician at Aurora Flight Sciences, a Boeing company.
This award is a special recognition presented at the Women of Color STEM Conference to individuals who have made significant contributions and paved the way for others in their fields.
Jones was honored for her leadership and innovation in scientific ventures that facilitated advancements in aviation.
Her notable contributions include work in aeroelasticity, a unique field that combines physics and engineering to study the interaction between aerodynamic forces and non-rigid structures.
She has applied her expertise to cutting-edge projects, such as electrical vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, novel aircraft configurations, and unmanned aircraft systems.
Even during her graduate studies, Jones co-developed a tool to aid in the creation of a composite, experimental high-altitude long-endurance test bed, showcasing her exceptional talent.
During her acceptance speech at the WOC STEM Gala, Jones expressed gratitude to her mother, whom she called a role model and mentor for demonstrating an unwavering work ethic and a commitment to lifelong learning.
She also thanked her sister, whom she referred to as a "companion pioneer on this path of technical excellence," as well as her colleagues for pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
