Recap of the Healthy Doses Seminar for World Health Day 2025

World Health Day is a global health awareness event observed annually on April 7, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and related organizations.
Looking ahead, the 2025 theme, "Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures," will launch a year-long campaign focused on maternal and newborn health. This initiative aims to eliminate preventable deaths and prioritize the long-term well-being of women.
To commemorate World Health Day on Monday, April 7, STEM City USA will recap its "Healthy Doses" series.
Launched in 2022, this series focuses on critical health issues, including diabetes, chronic pain, and leg artery blockage, which were significant causes of complications in intensive care units (ICUs) during the pandemic.
The expert panel included a vice president of medical affairs for Boston Scientific's Neuromodulation division, a senior director for endoscopy, and a vice president of clinical affairs, innovation, technology, and peripheral interventions at Boston Scientific.
This online event represented a significant milestone for STEM City USA, which aims to bridge the information gap by addressing topics related to education, healthcare, workforce development, and economic recovery.
Dr. Gupta noted that "obesity doesn't affect us all equally. Interventions can assist with weight loss, but it is not enough to suggest taking action. We must work together as a society, alongside policymakers, the community, and our families.
In the United States, over 120 million people, nearly 40 percent of the total population, are classified as obese.
Contributing factors to obesity include the consumption of fast food, stress, inadequate sleep, and limited access to fruits and vegetables.
Obesity is associated with severe health conditions such as sleep apnea, cancer, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
Dr. Jaff referenced a study indicating that, before the pandemic, peripheral artery disease (PAD)—a circulatory issue affecting blood flow to the legs or arms—was the leading cause of total and major amputations in cities such as Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami, and Atlanta.
Dr. Patel encouraged more participation in clinical studies, acknowledging that trust has been a significant barrier to involvement.
The second season of the Healthy Doses series, presented by STEM City USA, began in January 2024 and featured Dr. Erica Watson.
In the Healthy Doses series, she discusses the impact of mental health on overall well-being and the ability to make informed, healthy choices.
Dr. Watson emphasizes the correlation between mental health and an individual's capacity to make positive health decisions.
