Don't go west. According to a new study from SmartAsset, women working in tech in California tend to be underpaid and underrepresented when compared to their male counterparts.
Despite being home to some of the most prominent tech cities in the country, only one city in the Golden State, Fremont, ranked in the top 15 cities that made SmartAsset's latest list.
For the fourth year in a row, SmartAsset has ranked the best cities for women in tech.
Crunching publicly available on gender pay gap, income after housing costs, women’s representation in the workforce and percent growth in employment, they have come up with a list topped by Washington D.C., where women make up 38.5 percent of the tech workforce, the highest rate in the country.
Other cities in ranking order are:
Kansas City, Missouri
Baltimore, Maryland
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Albuquerque, New Mexico
St. Paul, Minnesota, and Arlington, Virginia
New Orleans, Louisiana
New York, New York
Indianapolis, Indiana
Houston, Texas
Louisville, Kentucky
