More than 50 women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers received category awards at the 24th Annual Women of Color STEM Conference. The annual gathering of truly stellar individuals was hosted by Career Communications Group's Women of Color magazine.
Dr. Pamela McCauley, program director for the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps at the University of Central Florida, received top honors as the 2019 Women of Color Technologist of the Year for her accomplishments in STEM education.
Other Women of Color magazine award categories recognize exceptional career achievements in government and industry and women who have energized their companies and their communities alike. All award recipients were recognized during the three-day event at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI. Oct. 3-5.
Thursday, Oct. 3 commenced with the Welcome Reception. On Friday, Oct. 4, the highlight of the day was the
Technology Recognition Luncheon, alongside professional development seminars, and career roundtables. Kendall Norris, CEO of the Global Leadership Forum, held a seminar on building your personal brand.
The GLF’s mission is to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM), as well as help older individuals get the experience in these fields to advance.
On Saturday, Oct. 5 the two-hour Breakfast with Leaders and Legends event ran from 7:30 – 9:30 AM in the Cobo Center Hall, which was the location for the evening's Women of Color Awards Gala and Dinner.
The conference also offered a STEM career fair for students and professionals, with over 100 corporations, businesses, and organizations in attendance. Attendees had the opportunity to meet and learn from executives representing Fortune 500 companies and federal agencies that are committed to diversity and to the advancement of women in the workforce. College students in attendance are able to meet award winners and learn the next critical steps in forging their own successful careers.
The evening's prestigious Women of Color in STEM Awards gala showcased the 2019 honorees, who are featured in the conference edition of Women of Color magazine, published this fall.
Since 1995, the conference has been the forum of choice for recognizing the significant contributions by women in STEM fields. The conference attracts exceptional talent within the nation’s scientific and technical workforce, and the event offers valuable career networking opportunities and prestigious award ceremonies.

Without a doubt, Dr. Pamela McCauley, the 2019 Technologist of the Year, recommends the Women of Color in Technology STEM Conference. "This an amazing event," she wrote. Bev Chandran also recommends the STEM Conference because it's "imperative" for women in technology to associate with organizations that support their careers. "The Technology STEM Conference should be on top of the list," she said.
Donna Bell, the 2018 Technologist of the Year, said the conference encourages women to succeed with the right tools.
