It's January and it's National Mentoring Month. For 2020, The National Mentoring Partnership has announced several events that are recognized at the national level and are celebrated on social media.
While January 8, 2020, is a day for volunteer mentors to celebrate their role and reflect on the ways mentees have enhanced their world, International Mentoring Day on January 17 marks a day of international conversation on social media where photos, videos, and messages of powerful mentoring stories are shared.
On January 20, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, inspirational words of MLK are shared to elevate the spirit of service through volunteerism.
Sheilon King (no relation) is director of Data Insights at AT&T and was one of the Special Recognition honorees at the 2019 Women of Color in STEM Conference.
She is an active community member in Atlanta, Georgia, focused on raising awareness of career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and the power of data.
King serves as a member of the board of directors for Scholarshot, which helps at-risk students with financial support, academic navigation, and personal guidance, as well as mentoring at the Irma Rangel STEM High School.
Over her 29-year career at AT&T, King has held diverse roles in customer service, product marketing, central office engineering, logistics operations, sales leadership, and operational support.
In a recent assignment, King worked with the city of Atlanta when it asked AT&T to help reduce traffic accidents within the city.
Using traffic GPS data, cellular traffic data, weather data, and demographics, King’s team created models that identified solutions to reduce congestion and remove obstacles. The project was featured in the 2017 Technology Showcase by the mayor of Atlanta, and King was on hand to present the many options to city and state dignitaries.
