The 2019 Technologist of the Year has shared a positive and morale-boosting message in the Transforming Your STEM Career June newsletter.
Dr. Pamela McCauley, who is a professor of industrial engineering and director of the University of Central Florida Ergonomics Laboratory, spoke about the impact of the pandemic and recent "turmoil" across the country.
"As the daughter of an Army Drill Sergeant, I was raised in a very patriotic home," she wrote. "I love this country and I believe in its greatness. But what we're experiencing right now is far from great," she added.
In a Call to Action, Dr. McCauley asked people to be vocal about anti-racism and post messages denouncing racism.
"My daughter said during church on Sunday her pastor (a white man) shared that he was having a conversation with a stranger (a black man) last week and was led to apologize to him. Confused, of course, because they're just two strangers sharing a few words, the man asked 'Why?' And my daughter's pastor said, 'Because I can't imagine what you're going through and I'm sorry and I just want you to know that,'" Dr. McCauley wrote in the newsletter.
"There's your call to action," the Technologist of the Year said. "Be active. Be vocal. Be kind and compassionate to strangers that look differently than you," she said."
