In 2015, Tiffany Owens was nominated for a community service award by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, where she had worked as a lead system safety engineer since 2009.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in microelectronics from the Rochester Institute of Technology over 20 years ago, Tiffany has volunteered with FIRST Robotics and served as a STEM group lead in her home church.
In 2016, Tiffany was honored at the Women of Color STEM Conference for leading a "Bring Your Child to Work Day" initiative in her division.
The initiative was designed to expose children of employees to the work their parents do in support of the U.S. Navy.
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division researches systems-related areas and pursues scientific disciplines, including physics, mathematics, laser and computer technology, software, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering, and biotechnology and chemistry.
As a premier naval scientific and engineering institution, Dahlgren technology is critical to new design concepts for current ships and systems integration for the U.S. Navy.
Tiffany told Women of Color magazine that she has a strong passion for exposing others to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and the possibilities of a STEM career.
She participates in the Metro Richmond Science Fair, the FIRST Lego League, and the FIRST Robotics Competition.
Additionally, she volunteers for STEM enrichment activities at Richmond and Henrico Public Schools.
In addition to her Women of Color STEM award, Tiffany has won the Naval Surface Warfare Center Distinguished Community Service Award, Richmond Joint Engineer's Council Community Service Award, and a University of Buffalo Science Technology Enrichment Program Graduates Excelling in Milestones of Success Award.
The upcoming WOC STEM Conference will take place from October 3-5. Click here for more information.
