She recounted how, as a little girl, she always enjoyed math and fixing things, an interest her parents encouraged. She fondly remembered her parents taking a risk by giving a watch to a seven-year-old to repair, knowing they might never see it again.

Dr. Yu also described traveling almost an hour by bicycle each weekend with her father to attend advanced math classes for about three years during elementary school.

Throughout her years in academia and industry, Dr. Yu discovered that she feels happiest, most productive, and most creative when collaborating with an inclusive group of people.

She acknowledged that Leidos fosters such an environment, empowering other women both within the company and in the audience to make a meaningful impact in the real world.
