Liminal, a battery manufacturing intelligence company, has brought on Denise Gray, the 2017 Technologist of the Year, as a strategic advisor.
Gray is a renowned executive in the automotive industry with over 40 years of experience. Her expertise in battery technology and tenure at GM leading the battery program for the Chevy Volt, along with her most recent role as the North American Head of External Affairs and Government Relations for LG Energy Solution, will help Liminal work with major automotive and battery manufacturers to deploy its automated EchoStat solutions into gigafactories worldwide.
Liminal's technology, which combines ultrasound with machine learning, provides advanced insights to battery manufacturers to improve product quality and reduce costs.
The company has raised over $35M in funding and plans to deploy its automated inspection solution, EchoStat, into a major battery cell manufacturer's factory to make EVs accessible to all drivers by improving battery quality, safety, and scalability.
Gray was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation.
Gray was inducted for her leadership in developing and producing electronic controls and battery systems for electrified passenger car propulsion system applications.
The NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and international members, senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world's most accomplished engineers.
As the president of LG Chem Michigan Inc. Tech Center in Troy, Michigan, Gray oversaw the North American subsidiary of LG Chem Ltd., one of the world's largest lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
She was also recognized as "the battery czar" during her 30 years at General Motors (GM), where she held roles of increasing responsibility, including heading global battery systems engineering and being a driving force behind GM's Chevrolet Volt vehicle.
Gray received the 2017 Technologist of the Year Award at the Women of Color in STEM Gala in Detroit, Michigan, hosted by the Women of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Conference.
