World Soil Day (WSD) is an international celebration dedicated to the importance of soil. It was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2002, and on December 5, 2014, the UN General Assembly officially designated it as World Soil Day.
Women of Color magazine recognizes Lashun King Massey, a pioneering engineer known for her work in soil cleanup, bioremediation, and enhanced biodegradation.
Massey (1982-2021) earned her Ph.D. in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 2011, after completing her master's degree in environmental engineering from Tennessee State University in 2006 and her bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the same university in 2004.
Candaice Deloach established software policies for multiple warfare system programs at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD).
Outside of her professional life, Deloach enjoys farming with her family.
Originally from Iowa, she began a mini lavender farm in her backyard, cultivating 80 plants.
Deloach believes that working in nature requires respect for ecosystems and a commitment to problem-solving.
Deloach received a Technology Rising Award at the 2021 Women of Color STEM Conference, which honors women innovators who exemplify professional excellence. She began her career at NSWCDD 18 years ago and has advanced to the role of chief software architect.
