In June 1983, NASA astronaut Sally Ride became the first American woman in space when she launched on the space shuttle Challenger. She was the third woman in space after two Soviet cosmonauts flew on a Soyuz mission in 1982.
It would take more than three decades before two NASA astronauts made space history with the world's first all-female spacewalk on Oct. 18, 2019.
Christina Koch and Jessica Meir went outside the International Space Station to fix a faulty battery component. Koch was also flying the first nearly yearlong space mission by a woman.
To help raise awareness of the need for more women and girls to aspire to careers in space, Olay, the skincare brand owned by Procter & Gamble, has announced a new ad for this year's Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl is the most-watched American television broadcast of the year.
"At this year’s big game, OLAY is partnering with Girls Who Code and five fearless women: Busy Philipps, Lilly Singh, Nicole Stott, Taraji P. Henson (star of Hidden Figures), and Katie Couric to prove there’s enough space… in space… for women," the company says on its website.
Jobs involving outer space include astronomers, aerospace engineers, physicists, technicians, and producers.
