Sonia Henry (far left) hopes to inspire young men and women to be the best at whatever they choose to be and not to be afraid to step out and try new things.
She worked as a summer intern at Hughes Aircraft Company in 1989, then joined The Aerospace Corporation in 1990 as an intern in the Systems Computer Requirements Department.
Sonia was introduced to Aerospace while a junior in high school when her mother arranged a meeting with one of the engineers to discuss career options for women in the aerospace industry.
In 1995, Sonia secured a permanent position as an Associate Member of the Technical Staff and later promoted up to Engineering Specialist. In 2008, she was promoted to Engineering Manager of the Software Systems Acquisition Section, Software Systems Assurance Department, Computer & Systems Division, Engineering & Technology Group. In January 2014, she was promoted to Associate Director, Acquisition Support and Information Department.
In addition to management and technical leadership, Sonia has a passion for working with young people in STEM activities and through the intern program at Aerospace.
For over ten years, Ms. Henry was responsible for the Computer Applications and Assurance Subdivision Summer Intern Program.
Since 2002, more than 50 interns have been hired to work during the summer and school year.
Sonia coordinates the annual intern Vandenberg tour and also schedules other lab tours and technical interchange meetings to expose interns to various capabilities and disciplines within Aerospace.
She also facilitates networking activities and coordinated a 2010 speed mentoring event for interns that was very successful.
She is a regular speaker at the annual Corporate Intern Overview, where her presentations on the importance of mentoring are very engaging. She serves as a mentor to interns and regular employees.
She has been a speaker at career days and participated in STEM events at schools within Los Angeles County. She co-coordinated the first 3rd grade STEM Day at Peter Burnett Elementary school in May 2013. Sonia’s goal is to "pay it forward" in honor of the many people in her family, teachers, and mentors who have helped her to become the woman she is today.
Sonia has been honored with many awards for her technical expertise and her community outreach. In September 2014, she received a Systems Engineering Division Individual Achievement Award for “informing, inspiring, and attracting summer interns for 12 years.”
She was the recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Diversity Award for her “leadership and promotion of diversity, inclusion, and excellence at Aerospace and in the community.”
She was also the recipient of the 2012 Robert H. Herndon Black Image Award “in recognition of exceptional educational, individual and professional achievement for the Corporation and for the Community.”
The Aerospace Women’s Committee presented Sonia with the 2008 Woman of the Year Award for embodying the theme “Paying it Forward: Inspiring and Motivating the Next Generation.”
