Women of Color STEM Award winner Soo Mae Chu is the model of technical competence at AT&T, She was recognized for her proficiency in many different areas, including Sales, Marketing, Engineering, and Project/Program Management.
Soo Mae was the first to attend college, on her mother's side of the family, fulfilling a multi-generational dream.
When her family arrived in the United States from China, her parents hoped for a bright future. Not only did Soo Mae attend college, she also graduated in electrical engineering, one of only a small number of women to do so in her graduating class.
In her first job out of college, she took on an AT&T position where Sales and Tech Sales/Engineering positions had been combined. The fact that her targeted customers were fiscally-challenged government and higher education organizations made the targets all the more elusive. She was the only individual on that first sales/engineering team to meet the target, create and sell customized data networks, and roll out a "Knowledge Community" group at AT&T.
This was a new concept, bolstered by her previous success to combine technical and sales expertise as part of a new "Sales Transformation" effort. The effort to create custom network solutions ultimately was expanded to other parts of the organization. Soo Mae was tapped to lead the DTV Program Office because of the breadth of her experience and her tireless attention to detail.
In addition to her business contributions, Soo Mae is also a tireless advocate for programs that expose children to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Prior to her move to Dallas, she was on the Girl Scout Heart of New Jersey Board of Directors. Since her relocation, she has participated in and led STEM activities which inspire and direct not only her own children but also those who have the benefit of her mentorship.
