Over 45,000 students from the United States, Canada, and China are expected to compete in the 28th annual Future City National Finals in Washington DC this February.
Future City is a project-based learning program where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. This year’s theme is “Clean Water: Tap Into Tomorrow.”
The teams of middle-school students will present their imaginative future cities to professional scientists and engineers from Bechtel Corporation, Bentley Systems, and the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing professional licensure for engineers and surveyors.
The finalists were selected over the course of January in regional competitions. First-place winners at the finals will receive $7,500 for the team’s STEM program and a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, second place winners get $5,000 for the team’s STEM program, third place winners will win $2,000 for the team’s STEM program. Teams coming in 4th and 5th places respectively will receive $750 each for their STEM programs.
The event will take place Monday, February 17 - Tuesday, February 18 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. Sponsors of this year's event include Shell Oil Company and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
