In October, Women of Color magazine's awards will honor the exceptional achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
The three-day event, organized by Career Communications Group and Women of Color magazine, aims to recognize innovation and celebrate diversity within STEM.
The Women of Color STEM Conference will take place from October 3 to 5 in downtown Detroit, a city that has hosted the event for over a decade.
Typically drawing around 5,000 attendees, the event has been held in other cities such as Atlanta, Georgia (1999-2010), Washington, D.C. (2001), and Dallas, Texas (2011, 2012, 2013).
The conference features various award categories, including Career Achievement, Community Service, Corporate Responsibility, Diversity Leadership, and many others.
Survey results from the 2021 Women of Color (WOC) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Post-Conference Survey revealed that over 54% of the students and professionals who attended the 26th annual WOC STEM Conference considered personal commitments and scheduling availability before registering.
The survey also highlighted that professional development opportunities were the most important reasons for attending the WOC STEM Conference, followed by inspiration, award recognition, and networking.
Additionally, more than 93% of survey respondents reported that their organization sponsored their attendance.
Attendees expressed their preference for hybrid events (a mix of in-person and virtual), with over 45% stating they would participate in such events in the future.
The report also shows that the attendees were from various organizations and institutions such as Avery Dennison, AWS, Ansys Corporation, Florida A&M University, Health Catalyst, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, Amazon, Corteva Agriscience, Hewlett Packard, and many others. The participant breakdown includes professionals, college students, and K-12 students, with 3,357 conference registrants in 2022.
