Many K-12 students experience life stresses, which have direct consequences for their well-being and lives. This panel will engage with educators who have firsthand experience with extreme traumatic events in their schools and communities, such as shootings, suicide, and bullying.
On the panel will be Whitney Allgood, National School Climate Center, New York, NY; Brian Bolden, Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, Decatur, GA; and Sherry Earle, Newtown Public Schools, Newtown, CT.
Dr. Chaunté Garrett will moderate.
Dr. Garrett is an instructional leader with building and district level experience in transforming schools.
While teaching, she led at-risk students to high levels of achievement. At the district level, she designed remedial curriculum, developed and implemented instructional initiatives, helped to develop policies promoting teacher quality and student access to opportunities in closing achievement gaps. She currently serves as a chief academic officer in eastern North Carolina.
The ASCD Conference on Teaching Excellence: Pathways to Equity is a "learn and do" conference that will help educators immerse themselves in developing and executing a comprehensive equity action plan and goals tied to a problem of practice from one of four equity pathways:
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM): Students of color and girls continue to be underrepresented in these fields of study and work. Rigorous, engaging STEAM-based learning advances equity for all.
Community and Family Engagement: Leveraging family and community strengths support the education and development of the whole child—every day and year-round.
Underserved Populations (EL, SPED, DACA, Families in Poverty, Trauma): Many children require specific instructional supports to reach their full potential, such as children living in poverty, those with disabilities, or who are English Language Learners, and/or are living in the United States under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration policy.
Teacher Leadership: Empowered educators use their talents, passions, and interests to positively influence students' learning, transform the profession, and inform change at the school, district, state, and national levels.
