WOC Online is celebrating Latinas in STEM for National Hispanic Heritage Month

In July 2024, Dionne M. Hernández-Lugo, known by the handle @DrHernandezLugo on X (formerly Twitter), shared her incredible experience of speaking on a panel about Artemis and Gateway at a comic convention.
Dionne, currently an executive manager at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is an advocate for science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM).
She is also a proud University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras graduate and has received several prestigious awards, including the Student Leadership Award at the Women in Color STEM Conference in 2014.
Dionne's academic journey includes earning a doctorate in physical chemistry and a baccalaureate degree in industrial chemistry.
In 2008, she was honored with the Bridge to Doctorate Fellowship by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which provides financial support to STEM students pursuing doctoral studies.
Dionne was also awarded the NASA Harriet Jenkins Fellowship in 2010, aimed at increasing diversity in mathematics, science, engineering, and technology disciplines. Her commitment to STEM education and leadership was recognized with the NASA Ambassador Award in 2012.
Dionne has contributed to various research papers and presented at major national and international scientific conferences.
She has worked as a research electrical engineer at NASA Glenn, where she has been involved in significant projects such as developing nano-carbon electrodes for Li-metal batteries.
Her work at NASA Glenn contributes to the development of game-changing technology in propulsion, aeronautics, materials and structures, communications, power and energy storage, and biomedical sciences.
The Glenn Center, where Dionne works, is dedicated to designing and developing technology to advance NASA's missions in aeronautics and space exploration.
With a team of over 3,000 scientists, engineers, and technical personnel, the center is at the forefront of shaping the future by revolutionizing air travel and exploring the universe further.
