Applications are now open for the Horizon College Scholarship. Established in 2009 by Women in Defense Michigan (WID-Michigan), the organization's aim is to encourage more women to pursue careers related to the national security and defense interests of the United States and provide development opportunities to women already working in these fields.
According to WID-Michigan, more than $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to date. To apply, you must be a resident of Michigan, currently enrolled at an accredited Michigan university or college, with at least junior status (60 credits), and have a minimum GPA of 3.0, among other requirements. Horizon Scholarship donors are described as some of the most well-known names in the defense industrial base.
Incidentally, many of the top defense contractors hire at the annual Women of Color STEM Conference, which is held in Detroit, MI, in October. They include Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, United Technologies, L3 Technologies, Huntington Ingalls, Leidos, Textron, and Booz Allen Hamilton.
While the Horizon Scholarship is designed for college students who are at least in their junior year, WID-Michigan also offers Junior Horizon Scholarships as part of their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. The application package must be received by July 31. Click here to apply.
