Throughout the United States, heritage months are celebrated to recognize and celebrate diversity.
In May 2024, the Federal Asian Pacific American Council will observe Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month under the theme "Advancing Leaders Through Innovation."
This month honors the accomplishments of people of Chinese descent, Asian Indians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Pakistani, Thai, Hmong, Cambodian, Laotian, Taiwanese, Bangladeshi, Burmese, Nepalese, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, Native Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian, and Tongan who have made significant contributions to America's economic, technological, and social landscape.
The Federal Asian Pacific American Council represents AANHPI employees in the federal government.
The "Advancing Leaders Through Innovation" theme pays tribute to the visionaries and trailblazers who have shaped AANHPI history and continue to influence its future.
Innovation, resilience, and a pioneering spirit are essential for American leadership, and AANHPI leaders have made significant contributions in these areas, despite cultural and systemic barriers.
In May, Women of Color celebrates award winners of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage who have made notable contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
The Women of Color STEM Conference recognizes these exceptional women's accomplishments and empowers women in STEM careers.
One such awardee is Jessica Sun, an information technology (IT) program manager at Northrop Grumman, who received an IT Leadership award at the annual Women of Color STEM Conference in 2014.
Jessica implemented a digital signage solution and consolidated intranet and collaboration systems at Northrop Grumman Corporation, where she also served as the enterprise information technology strategic planning lead.
She holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Maryland at College Park and a master's degree in software engineering from the University of Maryland University College.
