International Women in Engineering Day is celebrated every year on June 23. INWED is an international awareness campaign that honors the work and accomplishments of women in engineering.
This day offers a chance to showcase the achievements of women engineers and emphasize the excellent career opportunities available to them.
During Women's History Month, Women of Color magazine featured Rashmi Prasad, the recipient of the 2023 Technical Innovation in Industry Award.
Prasad pursued further education after completing her bachelor's degree at the Birla Institute of Technology in Jharkhand, India. With her father being a civil engineer and an older sister in engineering, she was drawn to the field.
After gaining some work experience, Prasad moved to the United States where she obtained a master's and doctoral degree in power electronics from the University of Minnesota, as well as an M.B.A. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Prasad's journey was challenging, and she faced initial doubts about her academic capabilities. However, driven by her passion for learning and innovation, she persevered.
As a distinguished staff research scientist at General Motors (GM), Prasad leads a global team in electric vehicle propulsion systems research.
Besides her technical accomplishments, Prasad is committed to mentoring and inspiring young minds, particularly girls, in STEM fields.
Her involvement in initiatives like First Robotics, Science Olympiad, and teaching in middle schools reflects her dedication to giving back and nurturing future talents.
