Lymaris Serrano is a senior manager in engineering management at L3Harris Technologies. She recently transitioned to the software engineering & image science (SW&IS) organization after spending most of her career in the systems engineering organization.
As part of the SW&IS organization, she provides functional support to the Auto-Intelligence Solutions (AIS) business area, leading a team of around 100 engineers.
She has played a significant role in the college recruiting team at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez (UPRM).
Being an alumna of the university, Lymaris has helped L3Harris Technologies recruit many new college graduates and interns, aligning with the company's vision for driving diversity in the workplace.
Prior to her current role, she was the enterprise management and infrastructure integrated (IE) product team lead on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites R Series (GOES-R) program.
Lymaris provided leadership, oversight, and direction to the GOES-R EI Team, which was comprised of 50 subject matter expert engineers from disparate functions.
She brought cohesion to the team by setting the tone for inclusion and instituted processes to help the diverse group work together.
Lymaris also assisted the project engineer in the day-to-day development activities and site deployment execution.
She led the GOES-R Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 initial upgrade prototype, utilizing Agile per the customer's request.
She was part of the leadership team that developed the GOES-R Agile process, including standing up the Agile methodology for the program.
The leadership team developed the code development and deployment processes along with the program's financial baseline processes.
Overall, Lymaris' passion for inclusion was evident in how she led the GOES-R EI team and changed the day-to-day culture to be more inclusive and collaborative.

Mary Hor-Lao, an executive at Abbott, won Technologist of the Year for leading groundbreaking developments in implantable pulse generators and virtual clinics that help patients with chronic pain and movement disorders.
Mary also advocates for women of color in STEM and philanthropic efforts to support children in Cambodia. In the upcoming issue, we'll cover this year's award winners from noteworthy companies like Boeing, Amazon Web Services, and General Motors.
