Nancy T. Stewart was the 2005 Women of Color Technologist of the Year. Nancy was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 8, 1945, and died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on February 2, 2022.
She valued education, earning a Bachelor of Mathematics from Rosary College (Dominican University) in River Forest, Illinois.
As a Sloan Fellow, she completed a Master of Science in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Nancy had an extraordinary career and was a pioneer in the information technology field. She was recognized throughout the industry for developing and managing large-systems operations.
She started her career at IBM Corporation and retired as the first Black female Vice President.
After retirement, she worked as an information officer at General Motors Corporation. She ended her career as senior vice president and chief technology officer at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., a year before she was honored as the 2005 Technologist of the Year at the WOC STEM Conference.
Nancy was known for offering her support and assistance wherever possible. She was survived by her son, Ronald Gregory Stewart, "guardian angels and caregivers," nieces, nephews, cousins, and others who were touched by her goodness and changed by her supportive strength.
Nancy was a devout Catholic and an active St. Regis Catholic Church member in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She was interred on February 10, 2022, at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, a cemetery operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit.
She also asked for donations to the Solanus Casey Center, a place of pilgrimage, healing, reconciliation, and peace inspired by the life and example of Solanus Casey.
