Youngstown State University will host the 24th annual Edward W. Powers Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Career Workshop. The free workshop will take place on Saturday, April 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center at YSU.
Heather J.H. Edgar, forensic anthropologist and professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico, will give the keynote address during the workshop. This event is designed to expose young girls from 6th to 12th grade to careers in STEM.
Edgar holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a master’s from Arizona State University, and a PhD from Ohio State University, all in Anthropology. Her main area of study is dental anthropology, and she has been in using virtual osteology to democratize science and improve identification of missing and murdered American Indians.
The event will feature panel discussions about STEM careers as well as hands-on activities focusing on bioengineering, physics, forensics, and much more.
