Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith was elected to the National Academy of Medicine for her significant contributions to the fields of health, medicine, and science. She currently holds several positions at Yale, including associate dean for health equity research and professor of internal medicine, epidemiology, and public health.
Dr. Nunez-Smith's research is centered on promoting health and healthcare equity through community engagement, supporting diversity and development in the healthcare workforce, and identifying strategies to reduce the global burden of non-communicable diseases. Her expertise led her to serve as a senior advisor to the White House COVID-19 Response Team and the chair of the Presidential COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force.
In addition, Dr. Nunez-Smith is the founding director of the Equity Research and Innovation Center (ERIC) at Yale, and holds several other leadership positions within the university's medical community.
She has a diverse educational background, having earned a bachelor's degree in biological anthropology and psychology from Swarthmore College, a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, and a Master of Health Science from Yale University.
Dr. Nunez-Smith hails from Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Her induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and her extensive leadership roles within the medical community serve as a testament to her remarkable achievements.
