According to National Today, Geologists Day occurs annually on the first Sunday in April. "The first Geologists Day was established by scientists in the former Soviet Union in April 1966," they write on their website.
Lina M. Echeverria is the 2006 Women of Color Technologist of the Year. She retired as Corning's director of exploratory markets and technologies in 2009.
Echeverría was the first woman to graduate in engineering geology from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia at Medellín, opening the door to a new field for a generation of women in an engineering school recognized as the most rigorous in the country. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in geology at Stanford.
Echeverria spent twenty-five years accelerating innovation. She led teams of scientists and researchers that developed everything from ceramic filters for car exhausts to glasses for TV screens and dinnerware.
She was part of a culture that has provided the world with everything from the optical fiber that is the backbone of the Internet to the glass used as the tough but beautiful touchscreen for iPhones.
In related news, the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) has announced that the theme of Earth Science Week 2023 will be "Geoscience Innovating for Earth and People."
The AGI is a federation of scientific and professional associations representing over a quarter-million geoscientists dedicated to addressing the geoscience needs of society.
Earth Science Week 2023 will explore established and emerging technologies and techniques used by geoscientists as they play a growing role in society through developing stable infrastructure; fostering sustainable water, mineral, and energy resources; analyzing and applying data about the Earth; and keeping people safe from natural hazards.
Earth Science Week is supported by many organizations, including the U.S. Geological Survey; National Park Service; Natural Resources Conservation Service; Geological Society of America; American Geophysical Union; Society of Exploration Geophysicists; the American Meteorological Society; the Paleontological Research Institution; and others.
The event, to be held October 8-14, will emphasize how innovations in the geosciences are helping communities create sustainable lives while accelerating environmental problem-solving worldwide. The celebration will also highlight the range of rewarding careers in geosciences and how those careers are vital to understanding, monitoring, and living on the planet.
The Geological Society of America (GSA), founded in 1888, is a global scientific society with academia, government, and industry members in more than 100 countries. Their conference will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. GSA Connects 2023 themes are "Diverse Science for a Sustainable Future" and "Climate and Energy Transition."
