Asha Goyal's inspiring story of overcoming adversity was featured in Women of Color magazine's conference issue, where she was recognized as the 2004 Technologist of the Year. Despite being affected by poliomyelitis at just two years old, Asha refused to be held back.
She excelled academically and became the highest-scoring female student on the engineering entrance examination at the Indian Institute of Technology. With her can-do attitude, she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in electronics, a master's degree in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in computer science.
Although mobility on campus posed a challenge, Asha remained undaunted and developed her wheeled transport, including a moped she called Luna. She even became an instructor in swimming and taught others her techniques after mastering three strokes and diving in just 15 days. Asha's corporate assignments took her to many countries, and she vacationed in several others, amassing a total of eighteen.
Asha's career in software development began at Tata Consultancy, where she served as a consultant from 1971 to 1994. She was a leader and innovator and led an initiative to design India's first counterpart to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations' criminal information center.
Asha continued to make significant contributions to the industry throughout her career, serving in various leadership roles at companies like Fujitsu, HCL Perot Systems, and IBM. Her team at IBM was the first unit to achieve recognition as a Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model Level 5 organization, the highest rating.
Despite her numerous accomplishments, Asha remained humble and shared a Sanskrit shloka from the Gita that emphasizes the importance of doing one's work and duty without focusing on the results and achievements.
Outside of work, she served as the president of the Lioness Club in Roshni, which works alongside the International Association of Lions Clubs to provide social work and charity. Asha's dedication to quality and innovation in software development make her a true inspiration and pioneer in her field.
